THE NAME JESUS

THE NAME JESUS

Light of the world you shine through the darkness,
Master of the seas you alone control each wave,
Alpha and Omega you know my whole life story,
Deep calls out to deep and it calls out your great name.

The Chief Shepherd who called this wanderer home,
The Word made flesh you walked among men,
The Great I Am who was and forever shall be,
How can I express how grateful I am?

The name Jesus, The name Jesus,
How my heart will forever cry out your name,
The name Jesus, The name Jesus,
Truly, you are the name above all names.

The Way that alone leads to the Father,
The Truth that dispels all of this kingdom’s lies,
The Life that has been breathed into this dead man,
The greatest treasure that this world has ever known,

The Vine that gives our very being its sustenance,
The Hope on which our lives are based upon,
King of Kings, we bow down before your throne,
With hearts of devotion we call out your name,
The name Jesus, The name Jesus,
How my heart will forever cry out your name,
The name Jesus, The name Jesus,
Truly you are the name above all names.

JUST SOME CRAZY FISHERMEN

I am always amazed at how Jesus does it. You know what I mean.  He will use the foolish of this world to confound the wise. The simplest of all men can sometimes be the wisest of all men.  This is one of the greatest treasuries of the Gospel to me. Not only does He want to save us but He wants to use us for His glory.

Matthew 4:18 ( ESV )

18£While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

  • Walking-Calmly and casually during the course of His day Jesus would approach these men.
  • Two brothers-Jesus would use families in his ministry. This is also cited in Mk. 1:16-20 He had met them earlier near Bethbara where Andrew had been a disciple of John. John in turn would direct him towards Jesus. Jn. 1:35-42 Now Jesus calls them for the long haul.
  • Fishermen-Just common men and they were not among the religious elite. There was nothing lowly per se about the work but it was something that many men were doing. I love it that Jesus will meet us wherever we are.

Matthew 4:19-20 ( ESV )

19And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

20Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

  • Follow-So simple but so complex. These men would start out on a short walk but it would become a journey that would become their whole life. Following Him as Christ Little ones is the greatest joy in all of the world. I want to follow in His steps and become like Him.
  • Fishers of men-He related to them on their terms and now they would fish for men.
  • Immediately-What obedience as without one moment of hesitation they left it all for Him.

Matthew 4:21-22 ( ESV )

21And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.

22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

  • James/John-Once again, Brothers who are now called by Jesus to follow. Mk. 1:20 Left all including their Father and his Hired servants. (They may have been wealthier then Peter and Andrew.) This James would also be the first of the Apostles martyred in Acts 12:2.
  • Immediately-This would be the response of the apostles when He called them. (Just like Matthew the tax collector who wrote this gospel.  They forsook their occupations, family and immediately obeyed.) Mark tells us they left their dad with his hired servants.

Matthew 4:23-25 ( ESV )

23And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.

24So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them.

25And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

  • Galilee-Reaching the forgotten ones of Israel.
  • Teaching-We should first of all teach Christ to all.
  • Synagogues-Houses of worship that He went into.
  • Proclaiming-Preaching, like a herald or a town crier. His urgency that we talked about earlier is now being proclaimed to all.
  • Gospel-Lit. The GOOD NEWS. Though we are all sinners and deserving of Hell we can live in light of the Good news which is that Christ Jesus Died and rose again for me.
  • Healing-He was concerned about the physical needs of man as well.
  • Every affliction-What is so great about Jesus is that He was not limited in His healing abilities. Leprosy, blindness, the deaf could hear and the lame would leap for joy. Later on even death would bow its feet before Him.
  • Syria-. The great Roman province north and east of Palestine, and, at the time of our Savior, including the latter. The cities of Damascus and Antioch were in the province. —People's New Testament
  • Healed them-The miracle worker was among them.
  • Decapolis-These were a grouping of 10 cities in the area. They were formed to preserve the Greek culture in this Semitic area.

Applications:
1.       Am I willing to share the Gospel with all men?
2.       Am I willing to abandon it all for whatever He calls me to do?
3.       In our dreams of reaching the world are we reaching the world that is next to our own houses?

THE URGENCY OF THE MOMENT

Throughout all of Jesus life there seemed to be an urgency in His ministry. He lived as a man who did not have time to waste.  I am often reminded of some of Jesus first words in Luke when He asked Mary and Joseph, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” The King James translates it as, “Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business.” His whole life was marked by this statement.
As we look at our passage today we now sense that same urgency brought up shortly after John had been arrested by Herod. The messenger would soon be silenced but His Proclaimed One would now go forth. The land of Israel and we ourselves would now hear the message of the King. There is NO TIME to waste.

Matthew 4:12 ( ESV )

12Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.

  • Now-After the temptations and the baptism Jesus now becomes the focal point as John is arrested by Herod for his proclamation of Herod’s sin.
  • Arrested-Matt. 14:3-4 This passage deals with John’s arrest.
  • Galilee-Jesus now goes north after John is arrested. This was the frontier land b/w Israel and the external world. (Imagine the Wild, Wild West.)

Matthew 4:13-16 ( ESV )

13And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,

14so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

15 £“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—

16 the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”

  • Nazareth-He would be rejected here. Luke 14:16-30
  • Capernaum-Capernaum was by the northern end of the Sea of Galilee and it was an important trade area. 4 or 5 of His disciples would come from this area. It was also an area largely frequented by the Gentiles.
  • Zebulun and Naphtali-When He went here He offered hope to an area influenced by false worship and demons according to Is. 8:19-22. A light would come into this area though whose name would be called, “Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Is. 9:1-7 Jesus now appeared to them.
•     Naphtali-This  N. outpost of Israel could now hear and see. These who once were the forgotten
        ones.
•     Galilee of the Gentiles-Called this because of the influence of the Gentiles in the area.
•     Dwelling in Darkness-Is. 8 Spiritual darkness in life and soul. (During the time that Isaiah made
this prophecy Ahaz was king. Israel was looking for guidance from anyone but their God.)
•     Shadow of death-This phrase is used in Ps. 23:4 but also tells us of the spiritual condition of the
        people. Eph. 2:1-4
•     Dawned-The Messiah’s glory was now upon them.

Matthew 4:17 ( ESV )

17From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
  • From that time-In the midst of the darkness, hope now goes forth, as the Light of the World was now walking among them.
  • Repent-John the Baptist message is now central in Jesus teaching. He disciples would preach this as well. Luke 24:27

APPLICATIONS:

1.       No matter how dark a place or a person might seem to be without hope. We can go forth proclaiming boldly that Jesus saves.
2.       Are you and I living as though there might not be a tomorrow? I guess what I am asking is, “Lord, do I see the urgency of the moment when I look into the eyes of those that I know are lost?” They are living in the shadow of death.  Do I live to proclaim?

THE TEMPTATION OF CHRIST AND LESSONS WE CAN APPLY.

Lust of the flesh

Matthew 4:3 ( ESV )

3And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

As we continue to study about the temptation of Christ, let us not just look at it from an academic standpoint. I believe that there are some simple and practical things that Jesus did that we can apply to our own walks when we are tempted. So as we look at the passage let us also try to look for ways on how we can have victory in our lives.

·          Note what Satan is called here, The Tempter
·          If-Two ways this could be taken one: A suggestion of mocking as if you are not. Or two: It could be simply translated Since, you are the Son of God.
·          Son of God-Key issue though here is that he is the Son of God.
·          Bread- Typical bread of that time would have been oblong in form or a round cake, thick as ones thumb. Broken not cut. The tempter knew that our Savior was hungry and knew that His flesh would have craved to be fed. The tempter knows where we are weak and will come at us in our weakest moment. God could provide a table in the wilderness.
·          Think about it this is the same one who would feed the 5,000. The children of Israel would complain to the Lord about how they were starving and how God was not providing the way that they thought was best. Look at Psalms 78:18-19. “They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved. They spoke against God, saying, “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?” There is no doubt that Jesus could have done this but he laid aside any fleshly desire in order to please His Father.

In temptations avoid things that would open your heart to fleshly desires.

Matthew 4:4 ( ESV )

4But he answered, “It is written, £“ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”

·          Answered-Note in all 3 replies from Christ He uses the Word and Esp. and all from Dt.
·          It is written-Jesus will use the Word of God as His resource when He is tempted. (How much more should we quote and memorize the Word?  Dt. 8:3 In this passage God allowed Israel to hunger so that He might teach them that He was their true provider.
·          Bread alone-The physical is not the most important thing in our lives.  God’s Word is what will nourish our hearts and souls.

In temptation realize it is the Word of God that will give us strength. Memorize His word especially verses that deal with issues that you are most tempted by.
When tempted remember the physical things that we crave for so much will pass away. Live for the eternal.

The pride of life

Matthew 4:5-6 ( ESV )

5Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple

6and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, £“ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ”

·          Then-Idea is that one temptation after another is thrown out at Jesus.
·          Holy City-That of Jerusalem
·          Pinnacle-Top of the S/E corner facing the deep part of the Kidron valley. Josephus says at one point it was a drop off of 450 feet.
·          For it is written-Ps. 91:11-12 for it is written -- (Ps 91:11, 12). "But what is this I see?" exclaims stately BISHOP HALL. "Satan himself with a Bible under his arm and a text in his mouth!"—Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary
·          Satan quotes scripture here to emphasize his point from Ps. 91:11-12 but leaves out the phrase concerning to guide you in all your ways. If Jesus did this He would not be walking in God’s ways by tempting his Father like the Israelites did in the desert. Jesus at all times wanted to do his Father’s will.
·          Lest you strike-Surely the angels will protect you.

When tempted realize we have nothing to prove. When pride starts to creep in I constantly ask myself is this how the servant attitude of Jesus would respond? Lord help me to give you ALL THE GLORY.

Another thing that stands out to me about this passage is Satan misquoting scripture. Realize brothers and sisters just because someone uses scripture to prove their point does not mean that they are using it rightly.
Keep in our heart and head that the applause of men will quickly pass away.

Matthew 4:7 ( ESV )

7Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, £‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

·          Again-Comes back once again to the source of truth and uses the Word of God. This makes sense as he is the WAY the TRUTH and the LIFE.
·          Written-Cited from Dt. 6:16. The people were grumbling about the Lord’s provisions for them and demanding that God would provide water at Massah.
·          Test-We will not presume upon the goodness and mercy of God. We do not have to prove ourselves to mankind and thereby taking pride about who we are or what we have done. If we boast in anything Let it be in Jesus Christ alone.

The lust of the eyes

Matthew 4:8-9 ( ESV )

8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

9And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”

·          Again-Just like us the temptations just keep piling upon Jesus.
·          Showed Him-In temptation Satan will try to tempt us through the eye gate. Sin is pleasing to our eyes.

·          Kingdoms-Father had promised the kingdom but the Son had to die and suffer first and then rise again. Jn. 12:23-33. Often lust of the eyes pushes us to go ahead of God’s program for our lives.

·          Give you-Valid because at this time Satan is called the god of this world. II Cor. 4:4. It lies in His power Jn. 12:31 and 14:30. It will be given to the Son. (Yet, Jesus knew the following statement was true, No Cross, No Crown. He had to suffer for our sin.)

·          Worship me-The ultimate desire of Satan is to be worshiped. Is. 14:12-14. He wanted Jesus to Bow down to him.

One of the questions we must always ask is, “Lord am I running ahead of your program?” If so show me now. When we fail during our times of temptation we must realize that we are bowing down to the Evil one. A great prayer during times of temptation is, “Father, help me right now to only BOW down before you.”

Matthew 4:10-11 ( ESV )

10Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, £“ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ”

11Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

·          Then-After this temptation.
·          Be gone-Satan will always flee at the commands of Christ.
·          Written-Dt. 6:13 I will only fall at the feet of the Lord.

·         Then-After Jesus command.

·         Left Him-This is for a short time as Luke 4:13 tells us he would come back again at an opportune time. Temptation is a constant thing.

·         Angels-Angels of God now come forth. Sometimes when we face temptations alone only at a time later is relief and comfort shown.  God will though comfort us one day.

After we are tempted do not let your guard down. Satan will once again look for an opportune time. We must always be prepared with the armor of God from Ephesians placed upon us.

TEMPTATION MATTHEW 4:1-2

Hebrews 4:15 ( ESV )

15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

1 John 2:16-17 ( ESV )

16For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.

17And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Hebrews 4:15 is such a powerful verse to me. Our Lord was tempted, yet He did not fail the test. That sends shivers down my spine every time I read it. We have a God who proved He was the perfect one. We have a God who is able to understand us and what we are going through when we are tempted. He was tempted by the desires of the flesh, tempted by the desires of the eyes, the pride of life but He prevailed. What a blessing.

We face these 3 sources of temptation almost every day. How often have I failed Him in these areas? I have failed Him far more than I will ever know. Right when I feel like I am getting victory over the desires of the flesh, pride creeps in. You know what I mean. It never ends. What a pleasure sin sometimes brings to us and we forget that this pleasure is a passing thing. This is why I included I John 3:17. John wants us to remember that all of this will one day pass away. The only thing that last is what we have done for Christ. What fools we are when we live for the temporary.

What a vast difference between our Lord’s temptation and our temptations. In his commentary on Luke, R.C Sproul makes the following contrast between Adam’s temptation and how Jesus was tempted.

Adam-Was in Paradise      Christ-Was in the Desert.
Adam-A full stomach      Christ-Had been fasting.
Adam-Had Eve with Him   Christ-Was alone.
Adam-Lived in a sin free world   Christ-Was tempted in a world where sin abounded.
END RESULT: ADAM FAILED        JESUS CHRIST PREVAILED

In this blog and the following ones I want to look over the temptation of Christ. What all was taking place and how we can learn how to face the enemy by looking towards Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith.

Matthew 4:1 ( ESV )

1£Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

·         Then-After the Baptism of Christ. Often after God has done a great work in our life we will be tested by the wicked one. In discipleship it is vitally important that we teach new believers about how they will be tempted and encourage them about the battle ahead and how to prepare.

·         The Spirit is the one who allows this to happen to Jesus. In temptation God will only allow us to go through what we can handle. I Cor. 10:13-14 He will never allow Satan to tempt us beyond what we are able to handle. This should encourage us. When we are tempted God is telling us that with His strength we can prevail.

·         Wilderness-A deserted and desolated area. It was a place where wild beast were located. Mk. 1:13. “The land here is barren and experiences extreme temperature changes between day and night. Fasting is difficult enough in itself, but this region of the Judean Mountains is very harsh and certainly added to the ordeal. Food, water and shade are scarce.”  JFB Bible Commentary

·         Tempted-Christ was tempted in all points like we are. Heb. 4:15 to be tempted -- The Greek word (peirazein) means simply to try or make proof of. JFB Bible Commentary

·         By the devil. The word signifies a slanderer (Rev. 12:10) His whole purpose is to destroy and to defame us.

Matthew 4:2 ( ESV )

2And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

·         After-These temptations took place when he was weak and not filled or cared for like Adam/Eve.

·         Fasting-This was Jesus preparation for the time of temptation. Fasting would go hand in hand with Praying. During temptation are we praying? Remember His words to His disciples when He taught them how to pray? Matthew 6:13, “And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” Like the disciples though when we are faced with temptation we find that our spirit is willing but our flesh is weak. One of the most important things that we must do when faced with temptation is to CRY OUT TO JESUS. Be marked by prayer.

·         Forty days-Elijah in I Kings 19:8 and Moses in Dt. 9:9 spent this amount of time fasting Forty days have passed before the temptations here take place. Even before we are faced with temptation may our lives be saturated in prayer.

·         Hungry has the idea of to the point of suffering. What will be more important to us the physical or the spiritual?

ONE OF THE BEST PREPERATIONS THAT WE CAN HAVE IN FACING TEMPTATION IS SATURATING OUR LIFE WITH PRAYER. UNLIKE CHRIST WE ARE NOT ALONE; HE IS THERE WILLING TO LISTEN AND TO HEAR OUR CRIES FOR HIS HELP. THE BATTLE IS NOT OURS BUT HIS.

3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF BAPTISM AND JOHN BAPTIZES JESUS

Matthew 3:9-12 ( ESV )

9And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

10Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

12His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

o   Axe is laid to the root-Judgment was now at hand. The axe was ready to swing and take the whole part of the tree. The roots and all were to be destroyed. All the unfruitful trees would be done away with and face eternal judgment.

o   3 types of baptism in verse 11 are mentioned.  1. John’s Baptism which was Lord I am being baptized to declare to all that I am a sinner and I am ready for the Messiah to come. 2. Baptism of the Holy Spirit-Not tongues but rather a baptism in which the Holy Spirit places us into the Body of Christ. I Cor. 12:13   3. A baptism of being immersed in fire. The future judgment in which unbelievers will inherit Hell.

o   (Note John’s humility in all of this: I am not worthy-He felt as though he was unworthy to even unfasten the sandal straps of the one who was Messiah.)

o   Winnowing fork-Tool that was used for tossing grain into the wind so that the chaff would blow away from it. (There are two groupings 1)Wheat which could be used and 2) Chaff which was of no use to anyone. Two Destinations of these groups:  1) Wheat-Gathered into the barn or made part of the kingdom.  2) Chaff-Which would burn with unquenchable fire. The judgment of Hell.

Matthew 3:13-17 ( ESV )

13£Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.

14John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

15But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.

16And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him,£ and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;

17and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son,£ with whom I am well pleased.”

§  Jesus-This is the one John had been speaking about earlier. The last we heard of Him was in Nazareth in Matt. 2.

§  If John would have had his way he would have been baptized by Jesus. He saw no need for the sinless lamb of John 1:29 to participate in his baptism.

§  The QUESTION IS WHY? There may be several reasons for this to have taken place. We know that by doing it according to Jesus Words Righteousness was fulfilled. Here are several. 1. Jesus identified with John’s message of the people’s need for repentance and need of God’s righteousness. He himself though sinless was identifying with the people’s need in this area. He will later bear theirs and our sin upon him and his perfect righteousness would be placed upon them and us who believe. 2. He was giving approval to John’s ministry. 3. He identified with us as sinners. 4. As an Aaronic High priest, He would enter into the ministry and this was a special ceremony that he would enter into for his public ministry. Ex. 29:4-7 In the same way our Lord now entered into his public ministry. They were washed with water and anointed with oil. Jesus was now washed with water and was anointed by his Father and the Holy Spirit.

§  All 3 were now involved. The whole trinity was represented Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. (The Dove was a symbol of virtue. Gen. 8:6-11 the raven and the dove. The fullness of the spirit was declared before all upon Jesus life. (He was already there but now it is declared.)

§  God declares before the whole world he is pleased with His son. Same words at the mount of transfiguration in Matthew 17:5 along with the words Hear Ye Him. The Father declares about His Son’s perfect righteous character.

APPLICATIONS AND OBSERVATIONS:

1.       AS A BELIEVER DO YOU NEED TO BE BAPTIZED? (WATER)  THIS IS NOT FOR SALVATION BUT TO DECLARE TO ALL OF YOUR FAITH IN JESUS.

2.       AS A BELIEVER YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN YOUR FAITH BUT YOU HAVE BEEN PLACED INTO THE BODY OF CHRIST.

CAN IT BE SAID OF YOU AND ME AT THIS MOMENT THAT THE FATHER IS WELL PLEASED WITH US?

The preacher. Matthew 3:1-2

Matthew 3:1-2 ( ESV )

1£In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

2“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Å      Those days-When Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod was over Galilee, and the High Priest would have been Annas and Caiphas.  Lk. 3. John like Jesus would have been in his early 30s.

Å      John the Baptist-Lit. John the Baptizer.

Å      Wilderness-An area probably west of the Dead Sea which was a barren desert like area. Probably near the N. region close to where the Jordon flows. (Why not Jerusalem? Keeps with the idea of I Cor. 1:26-29.

Å      Repent-A change of mind.  A radical tuning from sin, not by our merit but that would be manifested by a work of the Spirit that would cause changed lives that bore fruit. John was not satisfied with just regret or remorse this is the type of repentance that Esau showed.  Heb. 12:17

Å      Kingdom of Heaven-In Matt. another way of saying for God’s name. Idea is that it was God’s kingdom was coming to them and over their lives. The rule of the God of heaven over earth. 2 views: Kingdom now-with the hearts of believers and 2) The majority of the time Jesus is talking of a literal future kingdom in which He will reign.

The prophecy fulfiller. Matthew 3:3

Matthew 3:3-4 ( ESV )

3For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, £“The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare£ the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’ ”

4Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.

·         Isaiah-Is. 40:3-5 John’s ministry was to get the people ready for the coming of Christ.

·         Prepare-This comes from the custom of sending people in front of rulers to make the roads passable. All hindrances or roadblocks were to be taken out of the way and make the path smooth and straight if at all possible. Change the crooked to the straight.

·         Garment-His clothing and eating habits evoked images of Elijah from II Kings 1:8 this would remind some of them of the prophet who would be like Elijah before the Christ would come in Mal. 4:5

·         His keeping of the diet was in keeping with his status of a lifelong Nazarene.  Lev. 11:21-22 This was common in the area and they were esp. eaten by the poor. He was a man who did not live with comfort as his goal but like the common people around him.

The followers. Matthew 3:5-6

Matthew 3:5-6 ( ESV )

5Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him,

6and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

·         Jerusalem-The people came from as far away as Jerusalem, Judea and closer by from the Jordan. They were hungry and thirsty for the truth.

·         Baptized-To plunge, dip or to immerse. These people were not just being baptized but they were looking for a Messiah, they also were willing to declare their sins thus saying to all I am a sinner and in need of a savior. No water could save their soul but they were looking forward to a savior who would.

The false ones. Matthew 3:7-9

Matthew 3:7-9 ( ESV )

7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

9And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

Pharisees-Believed in miracles and the Law of God. They held the Word of God in high esteem but were often those who became legalistic and saw the Law as a means to salvation plus there man made traditions.

SADDUCEES-These were the liberals of their day and when it came to the Word of God they denied the supernatural elements of the Word. Both factions did not get along with each other but were united when it came to their hatred of Jesus.

·         You brood of vipers-He saw past their hypocrisies. Vipers were claimed as an unclean animal and John said you are their offspring. (Just like vipers they were often subtle in their movements behind the scenes.

·         Wrath to come-Images of the O.T. day of the Lord comes into their mind as a time of judgment in Zeph. 1:18. As far as John was concerned many of them deserved this day of wrath.

·         Bear fruit-True repentance is not just knowledge of something. Works are going to be a natural part of faith when one believes in Christ. Eph. 2:10

·         Presume-It was a natural assumption by many of them that they were automatically going to be part of the kingdom because of their Jewish birth.

·         Abraham as our Father-They would constantly use this statement against Jesus. In John 8:33-42 Jesus tells them that salvation is a heart issue not built on being born into the right race or by works.

·         Stones-God could make these rocks into people. God wanted these men who had hearts of stone to see them turn into hearts of flesh. Ez. 1:19 and Ez. 36:26.
